PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Story of a Remarkable Philanthropic Legacy
Covenant and Legacy chronicles the 35-year history of the Avi Chai Foundation and the charitable vision of its founder, financier Sanford C. Bernstein—later known as Zalman Chaim Bernstein.
Following a religious awakening in his mid-fifties, Bernstein embraced a more dedicated Jewish life and established a foundation devoted to strengthening Jewish education, culture, solidarity, and continuity.
Thirty-Five Years of Jewish Education and Culture
After Bernstein's death in 1999, the foundation received part of his charitable estate and significantly expanded its work. Avi Chai supported programs in the United States, Israel, and the former Soviet Union, influencing how young Jewish people were educated and how Jewish culture, learning, and observance were promoted.
Following its founder's instructions, the foundation deliberately distributed its remaining resources during the twenty years after his death and concluded its philanthropic work in 2019.
